Consultation hour: how unhealthy are tobacco flavors in the e-cigarette?

In Consultation hours, specialists, including a dentist, oncologist and sexologist/urologist, answer a reader’s medical question every week. Today: Many flavors in the electronic cigarette may be banned. How is that exactly?

Hans in ‘t Veen, pulmonologist Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland: First of all, the government plans to soon ban all flavorings that do not taste like tobacco in e-cigarettes. This bans many sweet (bubblegum, pina colada, cotton candy) and menthol flavors. For the beste liquids with nicotine you can buy online. Banning is a good idea because these flavorings disguise the irritating taste of tobacco and nicotine. This makes smoking e-cigarettes (also known as vaping or vaping) less attractive, especially for young people.

This is very important because vaping itself is harmful due to inhalation of toxic substances, apart from the flavourings. On the other hand, because the e-cigarette is a stepping stone to the even more harmful ‘normal’ smoking. With such a ban, 23 tobacco flavors remain for the e-cigarette.

Carcinogenic

The RIVM has now discovered that seven of these 23 tobacco flavors are carcinogenic. There is public discussion about the other 16 flavors because the health risks are unknown. Not everyone wants to ban those flavors because smokers of regular cigarettes could possibly stop smoking completely with the help of the e-cigarette.

However, that is an unproven argument.buy e cigarettes best price online. This strategy only works for a few people; usually an attempt to stop smoking with an e-cigarette eventually leads to smoking both the e-cigarette and the regular cigarette.

Extremely dangerous

That can even be extra dangerous: the harmful effects of both ways seem to reinforce each other. The e-cigarette also ensures that the circle of dependence is not broken.

As a pulmonologist, I say: ban all flavors, all e-cigarettes! The e-cigarette is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It seems less harmful, but it does pose a threat to health with an extra risk of (again) smoking.
